New study shows how Atalante X fits seamlessly into rehabilitation workflows

New study from Dr. Franco Molteni at Villa Beretta Research Rehabilitation Innovation Institute (VBRRII) shows how Atalante X fits seamlessly into existing rehabilitation workflows, with single-therapist sessions, rapid setup, and high patient throughput.

New York, NY (May 15, 2025) – Wandercraft, a pioneer in physical AI applied to walking robotics, highlighted new clinical results at RehabWeek 2025 in Chicago, demonstrating how the Atalante X is transforming rehabilitation outcomes for patients with severe neurological impairments.

A new case study, “Advancing Neurologic Rehabilitation: First-Year Outcomes and Insights from the Villa Beretta Rehabilitation Research Innovation Institute Exoskeleton Program (VBRII),” highlights the successful integration of Wandercraft’s Atalante X into their clinical program. Sixty patients took more than one million steps within the first year. Atalante X is the world’s first self-balancing exoskeleton and the first to feature a powered dynamic ankle. It enabled substantial improvements in gait, trunk control, balance, and spatial awareness across a wide range of pathologies, including stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and ALS.

Key Highlights from the VBRII Study:

  • Improved patient outcomes: Patients progressed from early gait initiation to natural multidirectional walking (forward, backward, sideways), leveraging task-specific training to improve overall function.
  • Significant volume of therapy: 750 sessions conducted with a single therapist per session, averaging 1,170 steps and 29 minutes in upright mobility per session.
  • Enhanced rehabilitation toolkit: Atalante X was integrated alongside conventional therapies, offering high-intensity, physiologic gait training that complements other modalities.
  • Operational efficiency: Rapid donning and doffing times under nine minutes maximized therapeutic work per session.

“These results confirm that exoskeletons like Atalante X are not just about restoring walking – they are about reactivating the body’s innate abilities to move dynamically and engage cognitively,” said Dr. Franco Molteni, Clinical Director of VBRII. “We verified the recovery of function using Atalante X, with patients walking not only forward but also sideways and backward.”

Atalante X enables natural heel-to-toe walking without the need for additional assistive devices, offering a gait experience that mimics the physiological gait pattern. Easy-to-implement strategies like team training, session optimization, and individualized patient progression provide a blueprint for rehabilitation centers aiming to maximize technology-supported recovery.

Matthieu Masselin, CEO of Wandercraft, emphasized the broader vision for rehabilitation: "At Wandercraft, we believe technology should restore and expand human possibility. The outcomes achieved at Villa Beretta show how Atalante X can redefine the rehabilitation journey — helping patients not only walk again but reclaim control, independence, and confidence in their daily lives."

RehabWeek, taking place May 12 – 16 in Chicago, unites various conferences on rehabilitation technology. Visit Wandercraft at the Dessintey exhibit (booth 10) in the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk ballroom.
